New Year New Art

Hello and welcome in the New Year! To be honest with you I don’t really get this whole “New Year, everything will be different” approach, however, I do understand there might be a bit of hope on the horizon with vaccines coming our way, even I feel more hopeful now that we’ve put 2020 to bed (which says something as I sometimes struggle to see the good in situations like the one we find ourselves in). We are all mentally and physically, if you are a front line worker (I can’t even imagine how it must feel), tired but let’s make the most out of Lockdown 3.0, so I would like to start the New Year with an art post. I had two full weeks off during the Christmas break, which has been the longest holiday in a while, so I gathered my painting utensils and started.

Facts:

  • Acrylic on canvas
  • 50cm x 70cm

This was a present for someone close so I wanted to paint a motif I was familiar with but also something a little bit different to the usual. The bottom part is meant to look like a skyline with a small two dimensional effect. The red and yellow circles could be interpreted as suns or a sky on fire. I really enjoy warm colours such as red, yellow and orange as it gives a sense of optimism, a bit like when lying in the sun and soaking up the warmth and light. Since it’s January now and lying in the sun in a park would include freezing my nose off, painting my own sunshine seems like a good alternative.

The material I used was Acrylic as it dries very quickly since I gave it away for Christmas and as usual creativity kicks in last minute. It was the first painting in 8 months and I realised how healing the process of mixing colours and getting them on a canvas, is to my soul. It completely takes off my mind and I swore to myself to paint more again during 2021. We shouldn’t forget though not to be too harsh with ourselves when it comes to being productive and creative during times like these. Sometimes you’ve just got to allow yourself to cuddle up on the sofa with a TV series or simply doing nothing. I can say though, using paint, mixing colours and creating your own space on canvas, can help switching off. Everything is art, so everyone can be an artist.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy year 2021, may it be a better year to the last, whatever that might mean to you!
