Today I feel like writing about a book I read a few months ago that really hooked me.
“Gypsy Boy” is an autobiography by and about Mikey Walsh. It tells the story of a boy born and raised up in a travelling community in the UK. The book tells the gripping story of a boy who was born into a community with strict rules and traditions.
Being a calm quiet boy who avoids conflict and despises violence, Mikey does not fit his fathers expectations of a son, who is supposed to beat his opponents in brutal fights to show his place within the hierarchy. Further, Mikey starts to realise his homosexuality, which is unacceptable within traveller traditions, which will also bring him into trouble to the extent that he risks his life. Mikey has to endure his father’s beating, his uncle molesting him from early stages on and general humiliation by his family.
It’s a gripping story that is based on real events written by the protagonist himself. I’ve read this book within 3 days. It’s not one for a light stomach, but it gives one a close insight into traveller society.
I highly recommend this book if you are interested in learning more about minority communities, it’s customs but also restrictions and how it can limit a young boy from growing up the way he wants to.
